A remote viewing session is recorded as a paper trail before it is read as a result: a monitor poses a question, a viewer writes or draws whatever comes, and the sheets are dated, numbered and filed before anyone checks them against the target. The reading happens later, against a transcript and a judge's rating, which is why the archive matters as much as the claim. The record, not the memory of the session, is what a later analyst can actually examine.

How is a remote viewing session recorded and read?

In the protocols used at SRI International and later at Science Applications International Corporation, a session was a structured event with a monitor, a viewer and a target pool. The viewer sat with paper and pen. The monitor kept time, asked for more detail at set intervals, and avoided confirming or denying anything during the run. Everything the viewer produced stayed on the page: words, fragments, small sketches of shapes, angles, water, structures, sometimes numbers. Nothing was edited afterward. Pages were initialed and timestamped, and the packet went into a file before the target was revealed.

The reading stage is separate. A transcript is typed from the handwritten sheets, and an analyst or judge compares it with the target material, often without knowing which transcript belongs to which target. Judging methods varied by program and era, from simple global matching to ranked lists and blind matching against decoys. The 1995 evaluation commissioned by the CIA through the American Institutes for Research, usually called the AIR report, treated this judging step as the weak point: when transcripts were matched against a single correct target and several decoys, the results were close to what chance would produce. That finding is about the scoring procedure as much as about the sessions.

The feedback step is where the record gets complicated. In some designs the viewer was shown the target after the session, which is standard practice for training and morale. In others, feedback was withheld to keep later sessions clean. Both choices leave marks in the file. A reader who wants to understand a session has to know which one applied, because feedback changes what a viewer can plausibly have learned from earlier runs. The documentary work collected at Ten Thousand Roads treats these raw notes, sketches and feedback records as the primary material, which is the right starting point: the session is the document, and the interpretation is a separate layer that can be argued about.

What does a controlled experiment show and not show?

A controlled remote viewing experiment can show that a judging procedure produced a particular hit rate under particular conditions. It cannot show, by itself, what caused that rate. The distinction sounds pedantic and is not.

Take blinding. A properly blinded trial keeps the judge from knowing which transcript goes with which target, and keeps the viewer from knowing which target was selected. That removes some ordinary channels: the judge's expectations, the viewer's ability to read the monitor, the possibility that someone in the room already knew the answer. It does not remove every channel. Session transcripts are long and idiosyncratic, and a judge who has seen the target list may still pick up on incidental cues. Randomization helps, but only if the target pool is genuinely varied and the selection is verifiable.

Replication is the harder test. A single study with a positive result is a data point. The question is whether independent laboratories, using pre-registered protocols, get the same effect. In the remote viewing literature, the strongest claims rest on a small number of laboratories and a small number of judges, and later attempts to reproduce the effect at the same magnitude have not settled the matter. The 1995 AIR evaluation reviewed the program's own studies and concluded that the statistical significance of individual efforts did not survive scrutiny of the experimental design, while noting that a few effects remained unexplained. That is a narrower statement than either side usually quotes.

What a controlled experiment does show is the shape of the procedure: who was blinded, how targets were selected, how many trials, how the judging was scored, and whether the analysis was specified in advance. What it does not show is a mechanism. Nothing in a hit rate tells you whether the viewer obtained information, whether the judge inferred it, or whether the result is a statistical artifact of a flexible scoring rule. The declassified STARGATE documents, released in large batches from the 1990s onward and now held in public archives, are useful precisely because they include the administrative memos, the tasking requests and the negative assessments alongside the session transcripts. Reading only the transcripts gives a misleading picture of how the program was actually judged by the agencies paying for it.

Why preserve the vocabulary and testimony of the earlier communities?

The words came before the program. Terms like remote viewing, coordinate remote viewing and controlled remote viewing were not coined by a government office; they emerged from earlier groups, from the 1970s research at SRI, and from a wider culture of experimenters, writers and correspondents who traded methods by mail and, later, on early online forums. The TKR heritage, the older vocabulary and the web-era discussion threads are part of the record because they show how the practice was taught and argued about before any official structure existed.

Preservation matters for three reasons. First, vocabulary carries assumptions. A term like viewing implies a mechanism that a neutral phrase like anomalous cognition does not, and the shift in wording tracks a shift in what researchers were willing to claim. Second, testimony is perishable. The people who ran sessions in the 1970s and 1980s are aging, and their accounts of what was actually done, as opposed to what was later written up, exist mostly in letters, tapes and forum posts. Third, the ethics of preservation require care. A testimony archive has to distinguish between a participant's recollection and a contemporaneous document, and it has to avoid turning either into a promotional claim.

That is the standard the careful archives try to meet: keep the raw material, label its provenance, and let the reader see the difference between a session sheet and a memoir. The same discipline applies to the attention and memory questions that run through the older literature. Subjective certainty is not evidence, and a record that preserves certainty without preserving the conditions under which it was formed is not much use to anyone.

What the archives can and cannot settle

An archive can settle what was written, when, and by whom. It can show that a session occurred, that a target was assigned, that a judge scored a transcript, and that a program office received a report. It cannot settle whether the underlying claim is true. That gap is permanent, and it is the reason the documents are worth reading in full rather than in excerpts. A memo that recommends continuation and a memo that recommends termination can sit in the same folder, and both are part of the history.

For a reader coming to the subject cold, the practical advice is to start with the procedure and work outward. Read a session sheet before reading a summary of results. Read the 1995 evaluation before reading a claim about what it proved. Read the declassified administrative record before reading a narrative about a cover-up or a breakthrough. The order changes what the material looks like.

The record as the unit of study

Remote viewing is unusual among contested subjects because so much of its paperwork survives. Session notes, sketches, feedback logs, judging sheets, tasking memos and evaluation reports are all available in some form, and they can be read against each other. That makes the field a study in documentation as much as in perception. The question of how a session is recorded and read is not a preliminary to the real question; it is the real question, because every later claim depends on the quality of that record. A reader who learns to read the record learns where the certainty stops.
